Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is a national non-profit organization with the goal of building a world where everyone has a decent and affordable house. The geekspeak team worked on three town homes that were being built for local low-income families in Centre Towne Oshawa.
Durham Outlook for the Needy, operating as St. Vincent Pallotti’s Kitchen, is a non-profit organization (NPO) that assists people in need by providing daily, low-cost nutritious meals. geekspeak worked with them by collecting canned goods, juice, butter and milk, plus essential administrative supplies. For two years in a row, geekspeak employees also rolled up their sleeves to prepare dinner service at St. Vincent’s. Everyone got involved, learned about the community and helped make the events a great success!
Hack for Good
In 2017, geekspeak hosted its inaugural Hack for Good hackathon with a 36-hour event that brought together software developers, graphic designers and marketers to create mobile apps to address a social cause. Participants came from across the province to compete for a grand prize. geekspeak plans to continue organizing hackathons annually to promote technological and social innovation in Durham Region. The theme for the next hackathon is Code Green with participants developing mobile apps that tackle environmental issues.

Camfed, One Laptop per Child
Camfed is an international NPO that tackles poverty and inequality by helping girls go to school and become leaders of change. One Laptop per Child helps empower the world’s poorest children through education. We proposed a unique fundraising event to our employees that would support both groups. The geekspeak 2014 Christmas Challenge pitted “geek vs. geek” in a series of fun challenges like thumb wrestling, hula hooping etc. Each was videotaped, reviewed, and ultimately wagered upon. The result was almost 100% participation and a total donation of almost $2000.
Town of Ajax & Forests Ontario
Forests Ontario is an organization committed to increasing the number of trees and plants in the province as part of the Ontario government’s Green Leaf Challenge. The goal is to plant three million trees across the province. geekspeak participated in the Town of Ajax’s Community Tree Planting day where 700 native trees and plants were planted in an effort to increase the number of trees in Ajax.
Rose of Durham
The Rose of Durham works with young parents and their children to provide a variety of services to help them establish a strong foundation and a better future for their family. geekspeak participated in the organization’s ‘Sponsor a Family at Christmas’ program and donated clothing, gift cards and other items to two families during the holidays in 2016.
The Great Shoreline Cleanup & WWF
The Great Shoreline Cleanup is a conservation program that works with individuals and organizations to clean up the lakes, rivers, streams and anywhere that connects land and water. A team of geekspeak volunteers worked together to clean up the Lake Ontario shoreline at a local waterfront.
